New C-Class Coupe and Cabriolet

Mercedes-Benz has revealed new versions of the C-Class coupe and cabriolet, writes Brian Byrne.

The sharper design of the new saloon and estate models is brought over to the other two.

The cars will feature a digital cockpit and dynamic body control suspension and new 4 -cylinder engines, some of which are equipped with 48V technology.

The two-door vehicles will go on sale in first markets from July.

Volkswagen has unveiled an electrically-powered sports car, the ID R Pikes Peak, writes Brian Byrne . Faster than Formula 1 and Formula E cars in a sprint, the new car has 680hp on tap and is the vehicle by which VW hopes to set a new record for an electric car at the Pikes Peak hillclimb event in Colorado, USA, in June. The ID R Pikes Peak has a 0-100km/h sprint capability of 2.25s. It weighs less than 1,100kg. The powertrain features two electric motors, and is designed to provide speed rather than range, as the hillclimb distance is just under 20km.

First picture of new Peugeot 508 SW

The first pictures of the new generation Peugeot 508 SW estate preview a car that will get its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in the autumn, writes Brian Byrne . The car will be available in Ireland from early 2019. Power options will include 1.6 petrol with 180hp/225hp versions, and 1.5 and 2.0 diesels ranging 130hp-180hp. Among the technologies to be available on the car will be an infra-red camera to detect people and animals at night beyond the range of the lights.

Volvo XC60 wins World Car of the Year 2018

The new Volvo XC60 midsize SUV has been named World Car of the Year 2018 at the New York Auto Show, writes Trish Whelan . The World Car of the Year win is the first in this competition for Volvo Cars. Volvo say the XC60 is one of the safest cars they have ever built. It also scooped the prestigious North American Utility of the Year Award earlier this year while the XC40 small SUV was named European Car of the Year at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. In the XC60, Euro NCAP’s best overall performer in 2017, Volvo’s City Safety Autonomous Emergency Braking system has been enhanced with steering support for when automatic braking alone may not help avoid a potential collision.
