Long A-Class saloon for China only

Here's another car debuting in China which we're not going to see in Europe, writes Brian Byrne.

It's a long-wheelbase version of the new generation A-Class saloon, designed and built for China preferences for more rear room. The standard wheelbase hatchback A-Class will be reaching first customers in Europe in May, and a standard saloon will come in the second half of the year.

The car will feature the latest driving assistance and connectivity functions rolled out already in many Mercedes-Benz models from the S-Class to the new Sprinter van.

China is the biggest individual market for Mercedes-Benz and Smart cars, and 430,000 of the 610,000 sold last year were manufactured locally.

Volkswagen has unveiled an electrically-powered sports car, the ID R Pikes Peak, writes Brian Byrne . Faster than Formula 1 and Formula E cars in a sprint, the new car has 680hp on tap and is the vehicle by which VW hopes to set a new record for an electric car at the Pikes Peak hillclimb event in Colorado, USA, in June. The ID R Pikes Peak has a 0-100km/h sprint capability of 2.25s. It weighs less than 1,100kg. The powertrain features two electric motors, and is designed to provide speed rather than range, as the hillclimb distance is just under 20km.

Single cyclists wanted for Skoda dating event

If you have a bike, are single and fancy some speedy dating, this is for you, writes Trish Whelan . Skoda is hosting their first speed dating cycling event on Saturday 30 June from 8.30am in Avon Ri Hotel, Blessington, Co Wicklow. From those who cycle for fun, to the hard-core committed - you’re sure to find someone that rings your bell! Hosted by Skoda ambassador, Muireann O’Connell, the event is the first of its kind in Ireland and gives single cyclists the chance to kick their dating efforts up a gear. The 60km cycle around Blessington Lake gives single cyclists the chance to meet likeminded men and women with shared interests. There will be two lines of cyclists, males on one side and females on the other. The (bicycle) bell will ring every 3 to 4 minutes, at which point the front cyclist on the right hand side will drop to the back, and all other cyclists move up a place. "C'mon, Aggro. Do your stuff …" Aggro didn't seem particularly interested in the brace of pork chops dangled in front of his snout. The crocodile might not be showing big interest in raw chops, but a couple of fingers or a hand might well have tempted him to an appetiser. "Come on, Aggro," Steve called again, this time almost bouncing the tasty pork on the croc's nostrils.
