Skoda students building Karoq Convertible study

Every year, students at the Skoda Vocational School are tasked with building a study of a variation on a current model from the brand, writes Brian Byrne.

This year — the fifth of the initiative — they're working on a cabriolet version of the Karoq compact SUV.

The finished study will be introduced to the public in June 2018.

Volkswagen has unveiled an electrically-powered sports car, the ID R Pikes Peak, writes Brian Byrne . Faster than Formula 1 and Formula E cars in a sprint, the new car has 680hp on tap and is the vehicle by which VW hopes to set a new record for an electric car at the Pikes Peak hillclimb event in Colorado, USA, in June. The ID R Pikes Peak has a 0-100km/h sprint capability of 2.25s. It weighs less than 1,100kg. The powertrain features two electric motors, and is designed to provide speed rather than range, as the hillclimb distance is just under 20km.

Volvo XC60 wins World Car of the Year 2018

The new Volvo XC60 midsize SUV has been named World Car of the Year 2018 at the New York Auto Show, writes Trish Whelan . The World Car of the Year win is the first in this competition for Volvo Cars. Volvo say the XC60 is one of the safest cars they have ever built. It also scooped the prestigious North American Utility of the Year Award earlier this year while the XC40 small SUV was named European Car of the Year at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. In the XC60, Euro NCAP’s best overall performer in 2017, Volvo’s City Safety Autonomous Emergency Braking system has been enhanced with steering support for when automatic braking alone may not help avoid a potential collision. The Barber and the Bicyclist, two tales of Darwin

Two businesses side by side, standout in their ramshackle single stories dwarfed by new high rise blocks on the Darwin skyline, writes Brian Byrne . The dirt car parks on either side wait for somebody to build on them, and presumably also on the businesses. The barber is happy to talk to a stranger with a funny accent. "It's still frontier up here," David Heinz says as he finishes with his current client. He's just offered me a beer and is surprised at an Irishman turning down alcohol at eleven in the morning. "Trouble is, people don't stay." That's part of why, he says, the local economy is only operating at 60 percent of its potential. On average, people who come to Darwin only stay four and a half years. "The next group stays for around twelve. Then you have the old Darwiners, but they mostly live outside."
